La investigación, liderada por científicos del Imperial College de Londres, analiza 45 estudios que relacionan una dieta basada en cereales con una mejora de la salud y un declive del riesgo de fallecer a causa de apoplejías, diabetes, cáncer y problemas respiratorios e infecciosos. Los expertos concluyen asimismo que tomar granos ricos en fibra, selenio, potasio y magnesio disminuye la probabilidad de contraer trastornos coronarios y cardiovasculares.
El director del proyecto, Dagfinn Aune, subrayó que estos resultados«revalidan» las recomendaciones de «aumentar el consumo de alimentos con cereales integrales para rebajar el riesgo de muerte prematura».

Sin embargo, el descenso más notorio en las opciones de contraer estas dolencias se halló en los usuarios que tomaban hasta 7,5 raciones en un día, lo que equivale a 225 gramos.
En concreto, consumir 90 gramos de cereales integrales en una jornada normal de 24 horas desciende en un 19% las probabilidades de padecer enfermedades coronarias y en un 22% las cardiovasculares. La mortalidad relacionada con una apoplejía se reduce en un 14%; con cáncer, un 15%; con afecciones respiratorias, un 22%; infecciosas, un 26%; y con diabetes, un 51%.
