The American Farm Bureau Federation’s Market Intel team published a detailed breakdown showing that of the $11 billion allocated for the row crop Farmer Bridge Assistance program, nearly $9.6 billion has now been paid out to approximately 500,000 approved applicants. Corn received the largest single-crop share at $3.45 billion, followed by soybeans at $2.27 billion, wheat at $1.34 billion, cotton at $874 million, and rice at $307 million. Payments on the program’s other eligible row crops total $652 million. Iowa leads all states with $843 million received, followed by Texas at $784 million and Illinois at $765 million.

The payments are calculated on a flat per-acre basis — corn at $44.36 per acre, soybeans at $30.88, wheat at $39.35, cotton at $117.35, and rice at $132.89. The rates are highest where 2025 losses were deepest. But the AFBF’s bottom line finding is stark: even with those payments in hand, all nine principal row crops covered by the program are still expected to post negative returns for the year. The $9.6 billion has helped cash flow. It has not covered the full downturn.

Farmer Bridge Assistance payments 2026 leave specialty crop and sugar growers still waiting

The $12 billion program allocated $11 billion for row crops and $1 billion for specialty crops and sugar. Row crop farmers received their payments starting in late February. Specialty crop farmers are still waiting. The AFBF noted that the April 24 acreage reporting deadline — which closed this week — was the first step toward releasing those payments. USDA has said it will announce commodity-specific payment rates for specialty crops once the acreage data is processed. Sugar producers were separately allocated $150 million, with distribution details still being finalized. Sectors not covered at all include alfalfa, aquaculture, and timber.

AFBF economist Bernt Nelson noted that the program was always designed as a bridge — not a full offset. The name says it clearly: it is meant to hold operations together while permanent safety-net improvements from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act take effect, including reference price increases of 10 to 21 percent for corn, soybeans, and wheat. Those changes begin with the 2026 crop year. But for farmers who are entering their fourth consecutive year of negative returns, a bridge that does not reach the other bank is still better than no bridge at all. For more on the financial conditions that make additional aid necessary, Agroinformacion covered the Farmer Mac report showing Chapter 12 farm bankruptcies up 46% with total farm debt heading to a record $624.7 billion in 2026.

What $9.6 billion looks like on the ground — and why it still is not enough

The AFBF’s Castillo put it plainly: while farmers are grateful for the help, this likely will not be enough to offset the economic storm agriculture is still weathering. The fertilizer price shock that followed the Iran war — urea at $858 per ton, anhydrous at $1,114 — arrived after the FBA payment rates were calculated on 2025 data. Those calculations did not anticipate the 2026 cost surge. An AFBF survey of more than 5,700 farmers found 70 percent cannot afford all the fertilizer they need for the 2026 season. Farm debt is projected to hit a record $624.7 billion. Working capital is falling. And the House is still struggling to pass a new farm bill that would provide an additional $20 billion in emergency assistance on top of the Bridge payments. The AFBF continues to call on Congress to act. The original analysis was published by the American Farm Bureau Federation on April 22, 2026.

Nearly $9.6 billion in Farmer Bridge Assistance payments have been distributed to approximately 500,000 approved applicants, with corn alone accounting for $3.45 billion and Iowa, Texas, and Illinois topping the state rankings, but the American Farm Bureau Federation warns that all nine principal row crops are still projected to post negative returns even after accounting for the federal aid, and that specialty crop and sugar growers are still waiting on the $1 billion set aside for them.

[1
1439,1444,1442,1440,1445,1438,1441,1443
post-3581","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-general","tag-9-6-billion-fba-disbursed","tag-afbf-market-intel","tag-all-9-crops-negative-returns","tag-corn-3-45-billion-soybeans-2-27-billion","tag-farm-bankruptcies-2026","tag-farmer-bridge-assistance-payments-2026","tag-iowa-843-million-texas-784-million-illinois-765-million","tag-specialty-crop-ascf-waiting","resize-featured-image

$9.6B in farm bridge aid sent — all 9 major crops still losing money

<meta name="description" content="Nearly $9.6B in Farmer Bridge Assistance has been paid to 500,000 farmers.
