The Lady in Red farm mystery began on a warm spring day in 1969 when a backhoe operator named Willie Williams was working the soil of Egypt Plantation in Holmes County, Mississippi, just yards from the Yazoo River. His machine struck something heavy at only three feet deep. When he and farm manager Bob Hardeman peered at the damage, they found an ornate cast-iron coffin shaped to human form \u2014 less than five feet long, with an oval glass viewing window at head height. The glass had shattered on impact. A sickly-sweet scent of alcohol rose from the ground. Inside lay a young woman who appeared to have been buried the previous afternoon.<\/p>\n

“Her physical condition was unbelievable,” said Jim Thomas, nephew of Hardeman, who spoke to AgWeb’s Chris Bennett about the discovery. “People got rattled. You have to understand: She was perfectly preserved.” The woman wore a red velvet dress, white gloves, and square-toed black-buckle shoes. Her dark hair contrasted with pale skin. Her arms were crossed gracefully across her chest. The coffin had been sealed and filled with a preservative liquid \u2014 almost certainly alcohol \u2014 that kept her body in a state of near-perfect preservation for well over a century beneath fertile Mississippi Delta soil.<\/p>\n

Lady in Red farm mystery: who was buried in a pharaonic iron coffin on a Delta plantation?<\/h2>\n

The cast-iron coffin itself offered some clues and many more questions. Coffins of that design \u2014 airtight, body-shaped, featuring a glass viewing porthole \u2014 were produced in the United States primarily between the 1840s and 1860s. They were expensive and associated with wealthy families who wanted to transport the deceased across long distances, particularly in the era of steamboat travel on Southern rivers. The Yazoo River, which ran within 100 yards of the burial site, was a major commercial artery in the antebellum South. One leading theory among local historians is that the woman died aboard a steamboat and was buried near the river by companions. Another holds that her coffin was being transported by water when a capsizing or accident left it on the riverbank to be buried by locals.<\/p>\n

Her clothing and the coffin’s construction date her death to before the Civil War \u2014 likely the 1840s or 1850s. She was young, probably in her twenties. She wore the finery of a woman of means. None of those details were enough. Holmes County Sheriff Carl Moore was called to the scene in 1969. Local historians searched records. No match was found. In August 1969, landowner J.T. Thomas petitioned the court to have her remains moved. She was reinterred at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington, Mississippi \u2014 given a grave but still no name. More than 55 years later, the Lady in Red farm mystery remains unsolved<\/h2>\n

Her grave at Odd Fellows Cemetery has become a quiet pilgrimage site. Chris Hammett, who works at the cemetery, brings flowers and prays over her grave. He told Southern Strange: “I remember when they found her and people were talking about it. It was the talk of the town. It’s just a mystery who she is and where she came from.” Visitors leave flowers and mementos. She has been written about in Mississippi newspapers, featured on Atlas Obscura, and now revisited by AgWeb’s Chris Bennett in a long-form piece published April 21, 2026 \u2014 more than half a century after the backhoe cracked her coffin open.
