The 5-area weighted average steer price last week reached $248.38, up $3.42 from the prior week and a new all-time record for that benchmark. In the North, live sales hit $250 per hundredweight for the first time ever \u2014 a psychological barrier the market had never crossed in the cash trade.<\/p>\n<p>The previous record for the 5-area weighted steer was $246.91, set the week of February 23, 2026. The live cattle prices record 2026 rally was driven by a combination of factors: recovery in equity markets, the return of speculative fund buyers, and most importantly, the tight cattle supply conditions that have defined the market for the past several years.<\/p>\n<h2>Live cattle prices record 2026 supported by tight supply and record consumer demand<\/h2>\n<p>The supply side of the cattle market remains historically constrained. The U.S. cattle herd stood at 86.2 million head as of January 1, 2026 \u2014 its smallest size since 1951. The feeder cattle market reflected those same pressures. The May feeder cattle futures contract reached a new contract high at $377.57\u00bd. The feeder cattle cash index hit $373.94 on Tuesday, up $7.27. Feedlots are not under pressure to sell, he says, because the next group of cattle coming forward are young calves that are not yet ready for market. That gives feeders leverage to hold their positions. Fund traders have returned as aggressive buyers, adding speculative momentum to fundamentally-driven price action.<\/p>\n<p>However, the market pulled back late in the week. Scott Varilek of the same firm attributed the decline to fears that the U.S.-Mexico border could reopen to feeder cattle imports. Any resumption of Mexican imports would add supply to a market that has been running lean. Dave Weaber, senior animal protein analyst at Terrain, projects fed cattle to average $250 to $255 per hundredweight in Q2 2026 and close to $260 in Q3.
