At least two tornadoes tracked through the greater Rochester, Minnesota area on Friday afternoon, captured on traffic cameras as debris and tree branches scattered across neighborhoods and rooftops sustained damage. In Lena, Illinois, Stephenson County Sheriff Steve Stovall confirmed extensive structural damage with no immediate reports of injuries. In Belton, Missouri, a tornado prompted emergency response and the city asked residents to stay off roads as damage assessment began. Marathon County, Wisconsin reported significant damage from a Friday afternoon tornado with multiple law enforcement agencies responding.<\/p>\n

Tornado outbreak central US: three rare PDS warnings issued across Wisconsin and Illinois<\/h2>\n

The severity of Friday’s outbreak was underscored by the issuance of three “Particularly Dangerous Situation” tornado warnings \u2014 the second-highest level of tornado alert, reserved for storms likely to produce destructive, long-lived tornadoes. The first PDS warning was issued at 3:34 p.m. CT near Cream, Wisconsin. A second followed at 3:43 p.m. CT in Lena, Illinois. A third was issued at 4:55 p.m. CT in Marathon County, Wisconsin. Tornado watches remained in effect Friday evening for 26 million people from Wisconsin to Oklahoma. The zone of greatest concern for intense tornadoes \u2014 EF3 or stronger \u2014 extended from La Crosse, Wisconsin south through Davenport, Iowa and Moline, Illinois. Michigan dam system under pressure as Great Lakes flooding reaches historic levels<\/h2>\n

Friday’s tornado outbreak arrived as Michigan and Wisconsin were already managing some of the worst spring flooding in recent memory. Parts of the Great Lakes region have experienced one of their wettest starts to spring on record, combining heavy rainfall with snowmelt from a very active winter. Rivers in Michigan and Wisconsin have hit major or record flood stages at more than 20 locations.<\/p>\n

In Wisconsin, the Wolf River in Shiocton was nearly a foot above its record flood stage Friday morning, leaving most village streets impassable and prompting evacuations that had been ordered Wednesday. Residents in neighboring Waupaca County were also advised to evacuate as floodwaters rose, and the city of New London urgently requested volunteers for sandbagging operations.
