Cattle futures 2026 are delivering returns that few commodity markets can match. At the retail level, ground beef is selling for $6.74 per pound nationally, roughly 18% above where it stood in the final year of the Biden administration. Despite repeated pledges from the Trump administration to bring beef prices down, cattle and beef markets have continued to move in one direction. Dave Weaber, senior animal protein analyst at Terrain, said that presidential and executive branch rhetoric about lowering beef prices has had little to no impact on retail and wholesale beef prices.<\/p>\n

Cattle futures 2026 reflect a herd at its lowest point since 1951<\/h2>\n

The foundation of the cattle futures 2026 rally is straightforward: there are not enough cattle. According to the USDA<\/a>, the total U.S. cattle herd stood at 86.2 million head as of January 1, 2026, down from a recent peak of 94.7 million in 2019 and the smallest count since 1951. The beef cow herd, the breeding females that determine future supply, has been contracting for eight consecutive years. The cattle cycle, a natural 8 to 12 year rhythm of herd expansion and contraction, is now in its 13th year and its eighth year of consecutive contraction.<\/p>\n

Recovery cannot happen quickly. A cow takes nine months to gestate and another 18 to 24 months for the calf to reach slaughter weight. That biological timeline means every year of delay compounds into the next one. Most forecasters do not expect meaningful new supply to reach the market before 2028 at the earliest, leaving price as the primary mechanism for balancing supply and demand in the interim.<\/p>\n

Three shocks hit the market simultaneously in 2026<\/h2>\n

A structurally tight market became even tighter when three separate supply disruptions struck in the opening months of 2026. First, the United States reinstated a suspension on live cattle imports from Mexico after New World Screwworm cases were detected as far north as the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Veracruz. Mexico typically supplies about 62% of all U.S. live cattle imports, primarily lightweight feeder cattle destined for U.S. stocker and feedlot operations. Third, approximately 3,800 workers at the JBS<\/a> packing plant in Greeley, Colorado went on strike in March, idling a facility that handles an estimated 5% to 7% of total U.S. beef slaughter capacity for three weeks. The combination of all three shocks arriving at the same time, against the backdrop of an already depleted herd, produced market conditions that forecasters describe as historically unusual.<\/p>\n

USDA has cut production forecasts and raised import projections<\/h2>\n

The USDA’s March 2026 outlook reflected the new reality. The agency lowered its 2026 U.S. beef production projection by 110 million pounds from the prior month to 25.810 billion pounds, citing a sharp expected decline in fed cattle slaughter during the first quarter.
