The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued multiple severe weather risk levels across the region, with the threat forecast to build through Tuesday. Millions of people from South Texas to southern Kansas are in the path of the storm corridor.

The FOX Forecast Center warned that the primary threats through the weekend will be damaging wind gusts, large hail, and the possibility of tornadoes. Making the situation more complex, severe storms are expected to track repeatedly over the same drought-stricken areas of Texas and Oklahoma. That combination raises the risk of flash flooding even in places where the dry soil desperately needs rain.

What the Saturday and Sunday severe storm outlook looks like for the Plains

On Saturday, NOAA issued a Level 2 out of 5 risk of severe thunderstorms covering the Big Bend area of Texas north through much of the Texas Panhandle, including the city of Amarillo. The storms are expected to develop during the afternoon hours as the system gains energy from warm Gulf moisture. Damaging winds and large hail are the main concerns for Saturday, though isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

Sunday brings a more intense and widespread threat. A Level 2 severe weather risk extends from central and southern Texas through Oklahoma and into southern Kansas, directly targeting the Dallas, San Angelo, Oklahoma City, and Wichita metro areas. Supercells capable of producing large hail and tornadoes are possible from Sunday afternoon onward, and the FOX Forecast Center noted the threat is more significant than what is expected Saturday.

A Level 1 out of 4 flash flood risk also covers parts of North Texas including Dallas, southeastern Oklahoma, and western Arkansas through the weekend. The flash flood danger is elevated because storms are expected to move slowly and track over the same areas more than once, increasing the total rainfall accumulation rapidly in a short time.

How this storm system hits farmers already dealing with drought

Parts of Texas and Oklahoma have been under ongoing drought conditions heading into this storm sequence. That creates a difficult dual threat for agricultural communities. On one hand, rain is badly needed to replenish soil moisture for winter wheat still in the ground and for early spring planting. On the other hand, intense rainfall arriving too quickly on dry, hard-packed ground runs off instead of soaking in, turning fields into flash flood zones and potentially washing away recently planted seed.

Large hail is also a direct threat to crops at this stage in the season. Hail storms in late spring can shred emerging wheat canopies, damage fruit trees entering bloom, and destroy plastic mulch in vegetable operations. Furthermore, damaging wind gusts in the 60 to 70 mph range can level grain storage structures, snap power lines supplying irrigation pumps, and down trees across farm property. For context on how drought conditions have been affecting the region heading into planting, Agroinformacion previously reported on how flash drought has been scorching Kansas winter wheat.

The threat extends through Tuesday across a much broader area

The storm sequence does not end with the weekend. On Monday, the system is expected to accelerate northward, expanding severe weather risks from the Southern Plains into the Upper Midwest. A separate, more powerful system is then forecast to move into the Plains on Tuesday, where forecasters say a more significant severe weather event could unfold from the Southern Plains to the Lower Missouri Valley beginning Tuesday afternoon.

That means agricultural communities from Texas to Missouri face the possibility of multiple rounds of severe weather across a five-day span. Farmers should monitor the NOAA Storm Prediction Center for daily updates to the severe weather outlook, as storm tracks and intensity levels are likely to be adjusted as the systems move closer. The original severe weather forecast was published by Fox Weather on April 8, 2026.

A multi-day severe weather pattern is targeting the Southern
