The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that producers in parts of Nebraska and South Dakota affected by wildfires that began on March 12, 2026, may now apply for low interest physical loss loans through the Farm Service Agency. In practical terms, that means eligible operations may be able to borrow money to repair or replace essential property damaged by the fires.<\/p>\n

What can these physical loss loans actually cover?<\/h2>\n

According to the official USDA release<\/a>, the loans are designed to help producers recover from damage to property that is essential to the success of the agricultural operation. That can include farm buildings, fixtures attached to real estate, equipment, livestock, perennial crops, fruit and nut trees, and harvested or stored crops and hay.<\/p>\n

For producers dealing with wildfire damage, that list is a big deal. It is not just about large structures. It can also mean the practical assets that keep a farm running day to day, from feed supplies to machinery that would otherwise be difficult to replace quickly.<\/p>\n

Who is eligible in Nebraska and South Dakota?<\/h2>\n

The impacted area listed by USDA includes Nebraska and South Dakota, but the primary eligible counties are all in Nebraska. They are Arthur, Blaine, Cherry, Dawson, Garden, Keith, Lincoln, Morrill, and Thomas.<\/p>\n

USDA also said contiguous counties may qualify. Those include Banner, Box Butte, Brown, Buffalo, Cheyenne, Custer, Deuel, Frontier, Gosper, Grant, Hayes, Hooker, Keya Paha, Logan, Loup, McPherson, Perkins, Phelps, Scotts Bluff, and Sheridan in Nebraska, plus Bennett, Oglala Lakota, Todd, and Tripp in South Dakota.<\/p>\n

The application deadline is November 23, 2026, which gives producers time, but not forever. After a disaster, paperwork can pile up fast. That is why USDA is also directing producers to its Disaster Assistance Discovery Tool<\/a> and local service centers to sort through loan and aid options.<\/p>\n
