America\u2019s planting map for 2026 is starting to come into focus, and the first big signal is hard to miss. Farmers say they expect to plant less corn and more soybeans this year, according to new survey-based estimates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n
That may sound like a routine acreage shift, but it matters well beyond the farm gate. Planting decisions help shape feed costs, export expectations, grain prices, and, over time, even the cost of food and fuel. And that is why this report lands with real weight.<\/p>\n
The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service said producers intend to plant 95.3 million acres of corn in 2026, down 3% from last year. Soybean acreage is expected to reach 84.7 million acres, up 4%, while all wheat planted area is estimated at 43.8 million acres, down 3%.<\/p>\n
In simple terms, this is the government\u2019s first survey-based snapshot of what farmers expect to seed this spring. NASS said the estimates are based on surveys completed during the first two weeks of March from nearly 74,000 farm operators across the country.<\/p>\n
Corn and soybeans compete for many of the same acres, especially across the Midwest. So when one goes down and the other goes up, it usually reflects the way farmers are reading prices, risk, and expected returns before planters roll.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s shift looks broad enough to matter. NASS said corn acreage is expected to fall in 37 of the 48 estimating states, while soybean increases of 300,000 acres or more are expected in several major producing states, including Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.<\/p>\n
USDA also released its quarterly Grain Stocks report on the same day, and the numbers added another twist. Corn stocks as of March 1 totaled 9.02 billion bushels, up 11% from a year earlier, while soybean stocks rose 10% and all wheat stocks increased 5%.<\/p>\n
That matters because bigger stockpiles can weigh on prices if demand does not keep pace. For farmers already trying to balance acreage decisions with tight margins, this is one more reminder that 2026 may be a year where every move counts.<\/p>\n
