The latest reports point to a simpler story than many shoppers might expect. More hens are producing more eggs, wholesale prices have dropped sharply from last winter’s extremes, and retail prices are following, even if seasonal Easter demand is adding a small bump in some places.<\/p>\n

Why the egg market is cooling down<\/h2>\n

Texas A&M AgriLife experts say retail eggs averaged $2.50 per dozen in the latest CPI data, down 58% from a year earlier. They also noted that large Grade A eggs that sold for more than $8 per dozen last winter fell below $1 earlier this year before edging up again ahead of holiday demand.<\/p>\n

That turnaround is tied mostly to supply. U.S. table egg layer numbers rose from about 292 million last March to around 308 million this year, giving the market more breathing room after highly pathogenic avian influenza wiped out large parts of the flock in 2025.<\/p>\n

What shoppers and producers may notice next<\/h2>\n

Egg prices fall as supplies rebound, but the drop may not feel perfectly smooth from week to week. USDA market data showed wholesale caged egg prices still declining in late March as Easter and Passover promotions ramped up, which means stores are balancing lower supply costs with strong seasonal demand for baking and egg-dyeing.<\/p>\n

In practical terms, that means consumers are getting relief, just not always at the same speed in every store. For producers, lower feed costs have also helped stabilize things for now, although economists warn that higher corn, soybean meal, and fertilizer prices could add fresh pressure later in the year.<\/p>\n

Why bird flu still hangs over the market<\/h2>\n

The market looks calmer, but it is not bulletproof. Fewer and smaller outbreaks this winter gave farmers time to rebuild, yet poultry operations are still watching avian influenza closely because another wave could tighten supplies fast and send prices back up.<\/p>\n
