The SBA said on March 27, 2026 that its new “Grocery Guarantee” will use the International Trade Loan program to offer a 90% federal guarantee for eligible borrowers. That is higher than the standard guarantee on the agency\u2019s main 7(a) loan program, which could make financing easier to secure for some applicants.<\/p>\n
The eligible sectors go well beyond row crops. The list includes grain farming, cattle, hogs, poultry, aquaculture, grocery wholesalers, farm suppliers, refrigerated warehousing, and specialized freight trucking. So this is not only about farmers in a field. It also reaches the businesses that move food from one end of the chain to the other.<\/p>\n
Reuters reported that U.S. farmers are entering spring under pressure from low commodity prices, high production costs, trade uncertainty, and war-related spikes in diesel and fertilizer. For the fourth straight year, many producers are dealing with tight margins, even with government support already flowing.<\/p>\n
Trump said the administration would also seek more aid from Congress, while farm groups continue pushing for extra relief. At the end of the day, that shows how serious the strain has become. Loans can help with cash flow, but they do not erase the bigger squeeze on the farm economy.<\/p>\n
The SBA said expanded eligibility begins on May 1. That gives lenders and borrowers a short window to see who qualifies and whether the stronger guarantee really unlocks more capital for production, processing, and distribution.<\/p>\n
