Spring planting is usually a battle with weather, timing, and luck. This year, many American farmers are also battling something less visible but just as powerful. Rising fertilizer and fuel costs are changing what may go into the ground.<\/p>\n
According to Reuters, analysts now expect U.S. farmers to plant fewer corn acres, more soybeans, and the smallest amount of spring wheat since 1970. The shift comes as the Iran war disrupts trade and pushes up costs for nitrogen fertilizer and diesel, two inputs that matter a lot when growers start penciling out profit before the first seed goes in.<\/p>\n
Corn is a high-input crop. It usually needs more nitrogen fertilizer than soybeans, and that becomes a problem fast when fertilizer prices jump. Soybeans, by contrast, need far less nitrogen, which makes them more attractive when margins are already tight.<\/p>\n
Reuters said analysts expect corn plantings to fall to 94.371 million acres from 98.788 million last year. Soybean acres are seen rising to 85.549 million from 81.215 million. In practical terms, that means some growers may decide soybeans simply look less risky when the bills start piling up.<\/p>\n
The cost pressure is not abstract. Reuters cited economists at the University of Illinois who said urea prices are up about 40 percent since the start of the war, while anhydrous ammonia costs have climbed nearly 20 percent. That is the kind of jump that can quickly reshape a planting plan.<\/p>\n
There is also the diesel issue. When fuel rises during spring fieldwork, nearly everything gets more expensive, from machinery passes to grain drying later in the season. It is a bit like watching the electric bill jump right when the air conditioning has to stay on all summer. Only here, the stakes are acres and income.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is due to release its prospective plantings report on Tuesday, but analysts told Reuters the numbers may be viewed skeptically. The reason is timing. The survey was conducted in the first half of March, while the war began on February 28 and costs kept changing after that.<\/p>\n
That means some of the acreage shifts now happening may not show up clearly in the first official snapshot. Also, planting decisions are not frozen in place. Farmers can still adjust when prices move, inputs get tighter, or profit projections weaken further.<\/p>\n
The acreage story does not stop with corn and soybeans. Reuters said spring wheat plantings are expected to fall to 9.843 million acres, the lowest since 1970. High fertilizer costs are part of that picture, but weak prices for the grain are making the situation even tougher.<\/p>\n
