The latest figures show a slightly larger overall herd, even as the breeding base keeps getting smaller.

That is the main takeaway from the March 26 USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service release on the Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report. As of March 1, there were 74.3 million hogs and pigs on U.S. farms, up slightly from a year earlier, while producers continued to rely on better litter performance and careful farrowing plans to keep supplies steady.

Why the total herd went up while breeding numbers fell

At first glance, that sounds contradictory. But the report shows the industry is producing more pigs with a slightly smaller breeding herd, which says a lot about how efficient modern pork production has become.

USDA reported 68.4 million market hogs and 5.89 million breeding hogs. The breeding inventory was down from a year ago, but the market side rose, suggesting producers are still filling barns and preparing animals for sale even without expanding the sow base in a major way.

Bigger litters are carrying more of the load

This is where productivity really matters. From December 2025 through February 2026, U.S. producers weaned 33.2 million pigs, and the average reached 11.90 pigs per litter, up from the same period a year earlier.

That may sound like a small technical detail, but it has real consequences on the farm. A stronger pigs-per-litter figure can help offset tighter margins, high feed bills, and labor costs, all while giving producers more animals to market without having to expand breeding numbers too aggressively.

What producers plan to do next

The next question is simple. Will farmers keep expanding, or are they staying cautious? USDA says producers intend to have 2.86 million sows farrow from March through May and 2.90 million from June through August.

Those numbers point to a fairly measured strategy. Producers do not appear to be making a dramatic bullish bet, but they are not pulling back hard either. In practical terms, that means they still see enough demand and margin opportunity to keep production moving through the summer.

The states still driving the industry

As usual, a few states continue to dominate the U.S. hog map. Iowa remained the top producer with 24.7 million head, followed by Minnesota at 9.30 million and North Carolina at 7.60 million.

That concentration matters for grain demand, meatpacking activity, and rural economies across the Midwest and Southeast. When hog numbers shift in these states, the ripple effects can reach corn markets, trucking demand, processing plants, and local feed suppliers almost immediately.

Why this report matters beyond the barns

For the most part, this report suggests the pork sector is still finding ways to stay productive even in a cautious environment. A slightly larger herd, paired with improved litter performance, points to stability more than surge.

And that matters well beyond agriculture. Hog numbers influence bacon and pork supplies at the grocery store, feed demand in corn country, and price expectations across the meat sector. The main official report has been published by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service.

U.S. hog and pig inventory edged higher as of March 1, 2026, even while the breeding herd slipped.
